For Boero Yacht Coatings, the newly released Challenger Pro is more than a product refresh. It represents a rethink of how premium yacht finishes are developed and applied.
Senior brand and project manager Marcus Reynolds says the Italian coatings manufacturer has spent the past three years redeveloping its flagship topcoat range.
“We actually gave our team quite a challenge to design a new product, and we’ve done this within three years, so we’re very, very proud of this product,” he notes.
The new Challenger Pro identity was officially launched alongside Boero’s Ferrari sailing partnership earlier this year, marking what the company describes as the next stage in its premium coatings strategy.
Fusion technology targets large yacht market
At the centre of the new range is Challenger Pro Fusion, Boero’s flagship high-gloss topcoat, combining an advanced polyester binder with the company’s acrylic tinting system.
“The reason it’s called Fusion is we’re still using our polyester binder as the main technology, but we’re mixing it with our tinting system. It’s a fusion of the two technologies,” explains Reynolds.
He says the polyester technology is particularly suited to larger yachts, where owners expect finishes that retain their appearance for longer and require less maintenance over the vessel’s lifetime.
With that in mind, Fusion has been developed to deliver high gloss, abrasion resistance and long-term colour retention while giving applicators flexibility to adapt the system to different project requirements.
The range accommodates both direct-gloss finishes and basecoat-clearcoat systems, allowing builders to produce increasingly complex paint schemes, including metallic, pearlescent and multi-colour finishes.
Demand for bespoke colours continues to grow
Reynolds says owner expectations have shifted significantly in recent years.
“The old days of having a blue boat, a white boat and a grey boat have really changed.”
Instead, owners increasingly expect completely bespoke finishes, with colours matched to everything from luxury cars to furniture and historic aircraft.
Supporting that trend is ChallengerMix, Boero’s digital tinting platform.
The system comprises 64 tints, six binders, three hardeners, six thinners, two clearcoats and three specialist additives, capable of producing more than 245,000 colour formulations across six different product qualities. Full technical details are available on the company’s website.
Those formulations can be reproduced through Boero’s dealer network around the world, allowing identical colours to be mixed for repairs and refits wherever a yacht is located.
That capability has already enabled the company to match finishes for Bentley-inspired yachts, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, Ferrari projects and even the original colours of a Second World War Spitfire.
“It’s not very often we say: ‘No, it’s not possible’,” Reynolds says.
Designed around the applicator
Rather than developing a single premium finish, Boero has created Challenger Pro as a complete application system designed for different stages of a yacht’s life.
Alongside the standard spray-applied topcoats, the range includes slower-curing versions developed specifically for large superyachts, where painters require longer flow times to achieve consistent finishes across expansive hulls.
Separate brush-applied products have also been introduced for yacht crews carrying out touch-up work, allowing repairs to match the original sprayed finish without specialist equipment.
The range also includes dedicated matte and satin finishes, reflecting growing demand for low-gloss coatings on racing yachts and selected superyacht applications.
Combined with a common tinting platform and worldwide colour management, the aim is to make both application and future maintenance simpler without compromising finish quality.
Built on continued R&D investment
According to Boero, the group allocates around three per cent of annual turnover to research and development. That investment supports a dedicated 1,850sqm research facility and a team of more than 40 technical specialists.
The same R&D capability is also supporting projects such as the company’s collaboration with Ferrari’s high-performance foiling yacht programme, where engineers are developing lighter coating systems, advanced composite solutions and new application techniques.
