MDL Marinas has confirmed that its sales and marketing director, Tim Mayer, will leave the business in May 2026 to take up a new role with 1851 Group.
Mayer, who joined MDL in September 2019, will continue in his role through to May 2026, supporting a structured handover to MDL’s new head of sales and marketing. This will ensure continuity across MDL’s commercial and marketing activity, including the delivery of the South Coast & Green Tech Boat Show, which takes place from 8 to 10 May.
Mayer will leave MDL to take up the role of group sales director with 1851 Group, which operates across marine, mechanical and electrical services, food and beverage, on-water superyacht support and construction.
During his six-and-a-half-year tenure at MDL Marinas, Mayer has played a central role in the development of MDL’s commercial and customer strategy. This includes leading a significant digital transformation programme, covering the introduction of a new CRM, website and sales platform, alongside the launch of Otium, MDL’s customer loyalty programme.
Mayer founded the South Coast & Green Tech Boat Show, which has grown into the UK’s largest regional boat show and an established platform for appointment-led sales, innovation and the promotion of sustainable boating technologies.
He also contributed to the development of Current Compass, MDL’s annual industry insights report, now in its third year.
Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, Mayer led customer communications across MDL’s marina network, supporting berth holders and tenants through a period of rapid operational change.
Sustainability has been a key strategic focus for MDL during this period. Mayer championed the delivery of the company’s Greener Marinas strategy, contributing to industry recognition including finalist status at the Blue Wake Awards in Monaco and wins for Clean Maritime Innovator and Sustainability Leadership at the 2025 Maritime Solent Awards. He also led the introduction of MDL Fitness, a concept converting kinetic energy generated in MDL’s gym into utility-grade electricity.
MDL also marked major industry milestones during Mayer’s time at MDL, including hosting the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Whitbread Round the World Race at Ocean Village Marina in Southampton, welcoming Tracy Edwards OBE and sailing yacht Maiden back to the city.
MDL Marinas thanks Mayer for his contribution to the business and wishes him well in his next role.
