“Hot topic this year”: Fireboy launches mist system for battery rooms

US-based fire-suppression specialist Fireboy has introduced a low‑pressure water mist system for battery rooms and machinery spaces.

The launch – at Metstrade – coincides with growing interest in suppression systems, in light of updates to marine regulations concerning lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries.

Fireboy says the BACC Mist System is designed for cooling and containment in areas with elevated heat accumulation and fire risk. It operates below 16 bar, using a compact pump that allows installation on smaller vessels, in battery energy storage modules or in auxiliary machinery environments.

“Metstrade 2025 was really promising, we had really good meetings and discussions, especially from the commercial marine side and large superyacht projects,” Martina Morosanu, sales manager at Fireboy, tells MIN.

“We had some interest in the water mist system, especially on vessels with combined requirements where they need a gaseous and water mist system as well. The interest in lithium fire early detection and prevention was a hot topic this year, where even smaller pleasure vessels are now required to have early-stage detection.”

The system is based on IMO MSC.Circ 1165 requirements for machinery space water mist technology. It is supplied as a pre‑engineered package intended to integrate with existing vessel systems. The configuration includes HMI and PLC control, redundant pump functionality and options for freshwater or seawater operation. Power can be supplied through 240V or 415V connections.

“The BACC Mist System represents an important step forward for marine fire safety, particularly as more vessels move toward electrification,” says Robert Aldous, chief operations officer at Fireboy. “Its low-pressure, modular design makes advanced water mist protection accessible to a wider range of operators, from small craft to commercial fleets.”

Fireboy is headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with its European facility in Poole, Dorset, supporting customers across the UK and EMEA.
