German car and motorcycle manufacturer BMW has moved into the water sports sector, through a collaboration with Slovenian manufacturer SipaBoards.
The new BMW x SipaBoards electric stand-up paddleboard (SUP) combines an integrated electric drive, self-inflating system and digital connectivity. The project — designed by BMW Group Designworks — represents BMW’s first electrically powered product for water sports.
The board is equipped with a motor generating up to 300 watts of power, assisting in paddling and helping counter headwinds and currents. BMW says the system operates near silently and without emissions, reaching speeds of up to 7.5 km/h (4 knots). The motor also powers the board’s self-inflation function.
Energy is supplied by battery modules with varying capacities, which can be swapped easily to extend use. Two 90 Wh modules allow between one and 3.5 hours of operation, with 180 Wh modules — available from spring 2026 — extending this to between three and seven hours. The BMW x SipaBoards SUP retails for €3,990.

Control is managed through a Bluetooth-connected carbon-fibre paddle. Riders can also activate a Freude Mode for increased power, lighting effects and haptic feedback. Additional features include automatic power cut-off via Bluetooth signal if the paddle falls into the water, enhancing safety.
The BMW x SipaBoards is designed for two riders and measures 3.65m in length, 0.82m in width and 0.15m in thickness, weighing 10.9kg or 14.9kg including the motor. The design covers the board, paddle and accessories, with materials selected for durability and sustainability. LED ambient lighting beneath the board aids visibility in low light.
It’s not the first time BMW has ventured into the nautical sector. In 2023, German boatbuilder Tyde partnered with BMW on The Open, a futuristic 15-metre foiling luxury day yacht powered by electric propulsion.
That was the second collaboration between Tyde and the German motor giant, following The Icon, a battery-powered maritime vehicle with hydrofoils adapted from sailing racing, to significantly reduce energy consumption.
