Nautical chart publisher Imray has formed a new joint venture with Austrian publisher Freytag and Berndt.
Imray is a storied nautical information publisher that has produced nautical guides and paper charts since the mid-eighteenth century. In 2024, the firm announced it would be phasing out its chart publishing, citing the growing trend for digital navigation in the maritime sector. It also put its charts business up for sale at the same time, calling on potential buyers interested in preserving its legacy.
The partnership with Freytag & Berndt (FB) – a map, atlas and travel guide publisher based in Austria – ensures Imray can continue producing and developing nautical charts, books and digital navigation products. The deal was first announced in April 2025. The joint venture, FB Imray Laurie Norie & Wilson, has now started operations in Vienna.
FB Imray will manage Imray’s portfolio under the Imray brand. In addition to its traditional range, the company says it plans to expand into digital formats. Staff from Imray in England will continue to support the new organisation. Dr Carl Rauch has been appointed chief executive officer of FB Imray, with Lucy Wilson taking on the role of editor-in-chief.
Wilson says: “The start of operations marks the beginning of a new chapter. We are combining Imray’s long tradition and maritime know-how with the innovative strength of Freytag & Berndt – ensuring that sailors will continue to be able to rely on our trusted navigational solutions in the years ahead.”
Rauch adds: “With the operational launch of FB Imray, we are sending a clear signal about the future of nautical charts. We are delighted that some colleagues from Imray will continue to contribute their expertise from the UK, thereby helping to ensure that the quality and reliability for which the Imray brand is renowned worldwide will remain guaranteed in the future.”
Customers in the United Kingdom are advised to place their orders through Bookharbour or Cordee. From 27 October 2025, orders from the European Union and other regions will be fulfilled directly by Freytag & Berndt in Vienna.
