Volvo Penta has announced the expansion of its Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) platform with the introduction of improved joystick functionality for V8 single gasoline engines.
The development brings the company’s full joystick capabilities for driving, docking and surfing to a broader segment of recreational and watersports boats, allowing for more precise manoeuvring and control across a broader range of applications.
The latest advancement is made possible through an upgraded electric steering system for single-engine setups, allowing operators to benefit from Volvo Penta’s advanced control systems, which were previously reserved for larger or twin-engine vessels.
Building on close to two decades of joystick innovation, the new system continues Volvo Penta’s helm-to-propeller approach to simplify the boating experience. Joystick Driving integrates steering, throttle and shift into a single control, allowing smooth handling and adjustments with one hand.
Joystick Docking delivers low-speed control for tight berthing situations, and Joystick Surfing, when paired with Vovleo’s Watersport Control, lets operators manage surf directly via the Glass Cockpit Display, maintaining a steady course and optimal wake at lower speeds.
Jens Bering, head of Marine Product and Solutions Management at Volvo Penta North America, comments: “These joystick features were developed in response to strong demand from OEM partners who saw their potential to elevate the experience for a broader base of boaters.
“Excitement from the market continues to fuel innovation and solidify Volvo Penta’s leadership in the recreation and watersports boat segments.”
The system is designed to deliver a more comfortable and intuitive experience. Joystick control can be fitted in ergonomic positions, while integrated safety features contribute to smoother operations. An optional Autopilot can also be added to the EVC system, providing additional navigational benefits and steering feedback.
“Volvo Penta’s joystick technology is built for modern boaters who value simplicity and comfort on the water,” concludes Bering.
