Navico Group has announced a new partnership with the sailing project, Maccaferri Futura, to harness competitive sailing as a platform for ocean conservation. The collaboration equips a newly launched Class40 racing yacht with smart marine technology.

The sailing yacht is outfitted with state-of-the-art oceanographic sensors to collect and transmit critical data on ocean health.

Maccaferri Futura is a two-year initiative from Officine Maccaferri, part of Ambienta SGR S.p.A., specialising in environmental engineering and developed in collaboration with ocean skipper Luca Rosetti. The project brings together performance sailing with hands-on scientific research, with a mission to support global climate initiatives and increase awareness of the urgent need to protect marine environments.

Gabriele Gatta, general manager of Navico Connect EMEA, comments: “Navico Group is proud to support this important initiative with Maccaferri Futura, where competitive sailing becomes a platform for ocean conservation.

“By integrating advanced oceanographic sensors with our cutting-edge marine technology, we’re enabling real-time data collection and sharing that contributes directly to global ocean health research. This partnership reflects our commitment to sustainability and protecting the natural environments where we live, work, and play.”

At the heart of the project is a collection of smart marine technology. The yacht carries the Shaping an Ocean Of Possibilities (SOOP) modular Sailing Box and Navico Group’s OP Box, linked with onboard systems from its brands, including B&G. Working with the environmental sensors from NESA (part of the Maccaferri Group), the setup measures ocean conditions like temperature, salinity, oxygen levels, and pH while the yacht cruises.

“Out at sea, technology makes the difference. Thanks to this partnership, we can combine racing performance with real-time scientific data collection, showing how sailing and innovation together can serve a greater purpose,” adds Luca Rosetti, Skipper of Maccaferri Futura.

The data onboard will be transmitted in real time to the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) Physics platform, where it is available to global scientists. Backed by the EU mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’ and supporting the EU Biodiversity Strategy 20230, the project links high-performance sailing with ocean research.

Team Principal of Maccaferri Futura, Giulia Albuzio, comments on the partnership: “Partnering with Navico Group gives our project the technological strength it needs to turn competitive sailing into a valuable platform for ocean research. Their technology makes our mission stronger and our message louder.”
