Garmin has announced Quatix 8 Pro, a nautical smartwatch incorporating inReach technology for satellite and cellular connectivity.

The firm says its latest device is intended to support communication functions including text messaging, voice calling and SOS capabilities without requiring a mobile phone connection. It also includes an enhanced boat mode that prioritises marine-related applications when users are on the water and hides them when they are ashore.

Quatix 8 Pro is available in a 47mm case and features a 1.4” AmoLED display, a titanium bezel and a sapphire lens. According to Garmin, the watch is designed for use both on board and on land and offers extended battery performance in smartwatch mode.

Susan Lyman, vice president of consumer sales and marketing at Garmin, says: “From fishing to fitness, wakesurfing to weight lifting, Quatix 8 Pro helps keep mariners connected through every part of their day, even when bringing a smartphone along isn’t practical or possible. With satellite and LTE connectivity on the wrist, mariners can feel more at ease knowing they can stay in touch with family and friends or get help if needed. And with the upgraded boat mode, it’s easier for them to access the features they need, when they need them.”

The watch includes built-in inReach technology, said to enabling users to send messages and location check-ins via satellite when outside cellular coverage, including offshore. It also provides access to weather updates through satellite connectivity. Cellular functions support voice calling, voice messaging and LiveTrack location sharing. The SOS function allows users to send an emergency alert to the Garmin Response coordination centre.

Additional features include compatibility with chartplotter voice commands, remote control of supported onboard systems such as entertainment and lighting, and integration with Force trolling motors.

Quatix 8 Pro is available via the Garmin website, with a suggested retail price of £1,139.99. Garmin states that the watch provides up to 15 days of battery life in smartwatch mode.
