Perkins has introduced its next-generation marine propulsion engines at Metstrade 2025, which concludes today (20 November 2025).

The British engine maker, a Caterpillar subsidiary, says the new range is intended for both commercial vessels and leisure craft. The engines have been developed in the UK.

The range uses a single platform and comprises three 6-cylinder propulsion engines. The Perkins M175C, M200C and M245C provide rated outputs of 173 hp (129 bkW), 200 hp (149 bkW) and 249 hp (186 bkW) at 2400 rpm.

Speaking to MIN at the launch event during Metstrade, Daniel Bhagwanani, commercial manager, highlights the engine’s variable-speed capability, its ratings, including MCS approvals, and the selection of optional attachments. “We also offer design to order: customer-tailored solutions that make it really flexible,” he says. “Any vessels with old Perkins engines who are looking for a new engine, this [range] is a perfect fit.”

Dave Wood, senior product service engineer, adds: “We understand that it’s rare to find two boats that are identical and with corresponding requirements. One objective was to design and build an engine that can be configured as a simple streamlined engine or scaled up to a fully equipped MCS-certified build,” says Wood. He notes that offering customers the ability to tailor their engine is central to the platform’s purpose.

The range is intended for both new build and repower projects. Cooling options include heat exchanger-cooled, keel-cooled, combined circuit and separate circuit systems, supporting installation across different vessel types and operating environments. Optional equipment includes basic sensors or an alarm shutdown controller system, a bilge pump, a mechanical throttle converter, flexible mounts, several gearbox choices, duplex or simplex filter options, marine society certified builds and single or double skin fuel lines. The platform’s modular approach allows it to accommodate a wide range of budgets.

Emissions compliance covers RCD 2, EPA Tier 3, IMO2 and, for the M175C, EU V. Service-related features include a 500-hour service interval, a self-priming fuel system, gear-driven water pumps, automatic valve lash adjustment, self-tensioning belts and planned service maintenance kits. “Whether navigating coastal waters or enduring offshore demands, these engines are built to perform in the toughest marine environments,” says Benita Liepina, account manager at Perkins marine.

Bhagwanani has been in post for two weeks and has worked at the company for eight years, most recently as quality manager. The Wimborne-based business mainly operates through distributors.

Bhagwanani links the industry attention on the new range to Perkins’ long heritage in engine manufacturing. While the company’s profile has varied over time, the firm’s new commercial manager says he is committed to continuing its revival with propulsion.

Shipments of the new engines are expected to begin in summer 2026, with orders opening in Q4 2025. Distribution will take place through the Perkins marine network.

“I can’t say too much, but there’s a pipeline later on to see if we can offer more power ratings on this product in the near future,” Bhagwanani adds.

Bhagwanani says he is looking forward to his new role, particularly meeting customers and strengthening brand awareness. “The biggest challenge is going to be supporting the amount of attention that we’re getting,” he says. “So many people are interested in this product.” It’s an enviable position to be in.
