CJR Propulsion has launched a new propeller design, the CJR sailfish, debuting this week at Metstrade 2025.
According to the firm, the new design has been engineered to improve vessel efficiency by up to 13 per cent, potentially reducing fuel consumption while increasing speed and range.
Drawing inspiration from the dorsal fin of the sailfish, one of the fastest fish in the ocean, the propeller features an undulated finish that directs water flow, reducing turbulence at the blade tips. The thinner trailing edges also reduce noise and vibration without needing an anti-singing edge.
Alex Stevens, technical sales director at CJR Propulsion, explains that the propeller delivers efficiency gains of 1.5-3 per cent over existing CJR Class S propellers, which typically offer up to 10 per cent improvement. Cape Horn Engineering has independently verified the efficiency gains.
Stevens notes: “Despite the unique look, these propellers are also a practical option. They can be retrofitted onto a standard shaft taper. The blades are also repairable – a key factor for many of our customers. And we can design and manufacture them up to 1500mm diameter and with any number of blades to suit a wide range of vessels and applications.”
The propeller is compatible with a range of engines, including diesel, hydrogen and electric, and is suitable for various vessels, from sportfishing and motor yachts to workboats and patrol vessels.
