The UK’s Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued a safety alert for two Mercury Marine outboard motors following the identification of a design issue that could lead to injury.
The alert applies to Mercury Marine 450R and 500R outboard motors. The OPSS notes that these motors present a potential risk of finger injury due to users possibly trapping their fingers in the top-cowl air vents during operation.
The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has published a product safety report outlining the affected products, the nature of the risk and the corrective measures to be taken.
According to the OPSS, the products do not meet the requirements of the Recreational Craft Regulations 2017. As a corrective measure, Mercury Marine will provide a bezel assembly designed to cover the top air vents.
The affected models include:
- Mercury Marine 450R, with serial numbers between 1E083006 and 1E099696
 - Mercury Marine 500R, with serial numbers between 1E099432 and 1E102508

Both models fall under the category of recreational craft – watercraft outboard motors – and originate from the United States.
Owners are encouraged to contact their dealer for assistance and installation of the additional bezel component to rectify the issue. In the UK, importer support is available through E. P. Barrus Ltd.
