Sailing digital logbook startup SailTies has introduced Crew Match, a new feature within its app designed to connect skippers with available crew.
The SailTies platform, which the firm says is used by more than 30,000 boaters worldwide, allows users to log voyages, miles, qualifications and boat types. The new Crew Match feature builds on this information to create a shareable boating CV, enabling skippers and crew to connect based on experience and availability.
Traditionally, finding crew or a boat has involved message boards or ad-hoc communication. SailTies says the new system is designed to streamline the process by matching crews and skippers more effectively, and improve the chances of a good match.
Crew Match allows skippers to post details of a voyage, including itinerary, vessel information and required experience. Upcoming trips appear on an interactive map, which can be filtered by date, location, duration and type of activity. Prospective crew can view skipper profiles, send messages and request to join trips. Notifications are sent when a trip is posted in a user’s chosen region. Accepted crew are then automatically added to a private group chat and logbook, and voyages are logged for all participants.
“We built Crew Match to get people boating more often,” says Chris Jacobs, co-founder of SailTies. “Every weekend, thousands of berths go empty while would-be crew search half a dozen Facebook groups. By combining a trusted digital logbook with a dedicated marketplace, we’re making it frictionless for skippers to find capable crew — and for boaters to get on the water, build miles and meet likeminded sailors.”
Other functions include automatic voyage logging to verify crew experience, filtering and push alerts for relevant trips, integrated itinerary and communication tools, and group integration. Yacht clubs using SailTies Groups can promote trips privately to members or share them publicly.
SailTies is available free on iOS and Android. Crew Match is available at no additional cost within the SailTies app.
